Nondiscrimination / Anti-Harassment Policy
The Washington State Funeral Director Association (WSFDA) is committed to policy, principle, and practice to maintain an environment that prohibits discriminatory behavior and provides equal opportunity for all persons.
The WSFDA affirms its commitment to provide a respectful workplace, safe and welcoming gathering spaces for sponsored district meetings, annual conventions, and educational environments in which all individuals within the funeral community may benefit from each other's experiences and foster mutual respect and appreciation of divergent views.
The WSFDA will not be tolerant of conduct that violates rights guaranteed by State and Federal law. The WSFDA will also not be tolerant of harassment of any of the association's membership, including the member's employees, extended family members, or client families that the member has been entrusted to serve. This includes but is not limited to sexual harassment, racial harassment, and retaliation for filing complaints of discrimination.
Furthermore, The WSFDA prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, sex, age, marital status, national origin, mental or physical disability, political belief or affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, genetic information, and any other class of individuals protected from discrimination under state or federal law with respect to new WSFDA membership applications, existing WSFDA membership benefits or renewing an annual membership within the WSFDA.

Each area begins with an Ethical Principle that sets forth the goals and ideals of the funeral service profession. Ethical Principles are goals that every funeral professional should strive to achieve. The Ethical Principle is followed by the applicable sections of the Washington State Funeral Directors' Association |
Ethical Principles serve as the justification for the specific requirements of the Code of Professional Conduct. Both the Ethical Principles & the Code of Professional Conduct are binding upon every WSFDA Member. |
WSFDA Code of Conduct
Members of the Washington State Funeral Directors Association (WSFDA) agree to honor the spirit and intent of the Code of Conduct as they hereby affirm and willingly accept the responsibilities and privileges that are implied by membership in the Association.
Code of Professional Conduct
- To maintain in all matters the highest standards of business, professional and personal conduct.
- To respect in all circumstances the confidentiality and trust placed in us by our clients and members of the public.
- To ensure that staff is qualified and competent.
- To ensure that facilities are adequate for all services rendered to the community.
- To provide information concerning the range of services available, the prices of these services, and the functions and responsibilities accepted on behalf of our clients.
- To provide a written statement of all funeral charges and disbursements to be made on a client's behalf at the time of arrangements, or as soon as is available.
- To respect the personal choice of clients and have regard for their diversity of beliefs in religious and cultural practices.
- To ensure that all advertising is in good taste and directed at informing the public.
- To be thoroughly proficient with the laws of the land as they apply to the funeral service profession.
Duty of Care
It is the duty of every member of the Washington State Funeral Director Association (WSFDA) to know and strictly adhere to the requirements of the WSFDA Code of Professional Conduct for the protection of the families they serve, the deceased individuals they care for, the profession they have dedicate themselves to, the communities in which they live & the importance of their membership in the WSFDA.
Obligation to the Government
Members of the Washington State Funeral Director Association (WSFDA) have an ethical obligation to maintain strict compliance with the letter and spirit of all governmental laws and regulations that impact the funeral consumer, the funeral profession, and public health.
Code of Professional Conduct
- WFSDA members shall not knowingly make or file false records or reports in the practice of funeral service.
- WSFDA members shall comply with all Federal, State, or local laws, rules, or regulations governing or impacting the practice of funeral service.
- WSFDA members shall comply with all Federal, State, or local laws, rules, or regulations that were enacted to protect consumers.
- WSFDA members shall comply with all Federal, State, or local Taws, rules, or regulations that were enacted to protect the environment.
Obligation to the Deceased
Members of the Washington State Funeral Director Association (WSFDA) have an ethical obligation to care for each deceased person with the highest respect and dignity, and to transport, prepare, and shelter the remains in a professional, caring, and secure manner.
Code of Professional Conduct
- All deceased persons shall be treated with proper care and dignity during transfer from the place of death, while in the care of the funeral director, and during subsequent transportation of the remains.
- Only authorized personnel of the funeral home or those persons authorized by the family shall be in attendance during the preparation of the remains.
- All deceased persons in the preparation room shall be treated with proper care and dignity and shall be respectfully covered at all times.
- WSFDA members shall not transport, hold or carry out the disposition of human remains without all permits and authorizations required by law.
- WSFDA members shall not violate any statute, ordinance, or regulation affecting the handling, custody, care, or transportation of human remains.
